Abstract: In this work the reaction p + p $\rightarrow \pi^{+}$ + d was studied at two energies close to threshold (corresponding to $\eta$ = 0.22 and 0.18 with $\eta$ = q/(m$_{\pi} \cdot$ c) and q the pion centre-of-mass momentum) over the full angular range. So far there existed no data from this reaction in the energy region so close to threshold, but only from the isospincorrelated reaction n + p $\rightarrow \pi^{0}$ + d and from the time reversed reaction $\pi^{+}$ + d $\rightarrow$ p + p.The measurements were done at the magnetic spectrometer BIG KARL at COSY Jülich in two beam times in December 1994 and May 1995. The experimental setup atthe spectrometer with its new focal plane detectors is described and the method of data analysis and background reduction is shown. At the studied energies (corresponding to beam momenta of 800.5 and 796.5 MeV / c) the spectrometer had an acceptance less than 100 %, so corrections had to be applied to the angular distributions. The data are then compared to theoretical predictions. The deduced total cross sections and anisotropies are in good agreement with the so far existing data from the isospin-correlated and time reversed reactions, so that there is no evidence for charge symmetry breaking or time reversal violation.
